Communications Officer(£15.58 per hour)

Purpose of Role:

To support the Head of Policy & External Relations in delivering effective internal and external communications. This includes managing media relations, social media content, digital engagement, and internal communications to promote the Council’s services, enhance its reputation, and engage key audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Press & Media:Develop and manage a schedule of proactive news stories, press releases, blogs, case studies, and features to promote Council services. Respond to media and public enquiries, manage interviews, and produce briefings to protect and enhance the Council’s reputation. Monitor press coverage and evaluate media performance.

Social Media & Digital:Lead the planning and content creation for Council websites and social media channels (e.g. Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram). Support services in utilising digital platforms to raise awareness, drive engagement, and share information. Produce video, photography, and audio content to support campaigns, events, and initiatives. Monitor performance and drive improvements across digital platforms.

Internal Communications:Support the development of internal communication tools such as the staff intranet, Facebook group, and e-newsletters. Work with directorates and Cabinet Members to enhance internal engagement and align messaging across the organisation.

Campaigns & Strategic Projects:Deliver integrated communications for major campaigns, events, and initiatives using a range of PR and marketing techniques. Support branding activity across the Council and lead communication efforts that promote Preston as a growing, inclusive, and ambitious city. Offer advice on reputational matters and provide crisis communications support when required.

General Duties:Maintain up-to-date knowledge through professional development and training. Attend events, support live communications activities, take photographs, and complete administrative tasks as needed to support the Communications Team.
